RE: New to RVing and have some simple questions

Welcome to the forum. As others have stated a quick search should reveal most of the answers to your questions except for maybe the axle clearance issue. I would only add to the above post the need to keep a small amount of water in both your black and grey tanks at all times. If not, any remaining solids will harden over time and become permanent fixtures on the bottom. In the winter months I usually clean all holding tanks out by flushing several times and then bleach them before storage.

RE: GMC Pricing

You should be able to find some great deals currently on trucks. Start by doing some research on sites like Edmunds.com to determine the invoice price as close as possible. This should give you a real good starting point for negotiating. I would think in today's truck market you should be able to purchase below invoice price on any in stock truck. After you have a good figure in mind for a particular model then subtract any factory or dealer rebates. Forget about the MSRP. Work the oppoosite direction. Hope this helps. Good luck

RE: Converter Box question

One suggestion. Instead of upgrading the TT antenna, why not just ditch the converter box and spend the antenna money on a new HD TV. I just purchased a 15inch LCD and it works excellent with the original batwing antenna. There is no need to upgrade the antenna with a HD TV. It will still receive the analog stations (for now) and any available digital (480,720,1080) broadcast as well. The only slight drawback is the HD TV will not display the current analog signals quite as well as a regular analog TV but it's really not that much difference.

RE: The Formaldehyde topic hits Congress!!!

The RV industry is long long overdue for some sort of regulation. They should all be accountable for the junk that gets put on the market and sold at inflated prices with worthless warranties. Additionally, I would like to know what the government (FEMA) intends to do with the thousands of trailers they are currently holding.

RE: Dometic refrigerator recall

Yep..Had ours done several weeks ago as well. What a waste of time that was. I guess the shields and thermocoupler needed to be added but like others have said this just hinders you from getting to anything now. Dometic didn't address the real issue at all which is I believe is an improperly sized heating element. If this is how Dometic treats it's customers and covers up the real problem I will make sure my next RV doesn't have a Dometic fridge.

RE: FEMA Might Use Trailers Again......

NOTHING could be any cheaper than those junkers built using the cheapest construction methods, no quality standards enforced and made by the lowest bidder. The only change I read about was requiring them to meet the same formaldehyde standards as any other RV must meet. I totally disagree because I have one purchased through the GSA auctions. Most of the trailers (not all) are the exact same ones found on any dealer lot. And yes..all trailers have formaldahyde . Like everyone said just air it out for a few days and it's gone. I would buy another one in a second if they would re-open the auction. It's a real shame this whole issue has come up because some folks just didn't use common sense!

RE: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.

Hello All ! Great forum here. I discovered it several months ago when looking for information on inexpensive gensets for my trailer. I started reading from the beginning and made it through about page 220 or so. I just can't keep up! Anyway.. I learned enough to know the Champion was an excelllent deal. So this past weekend I drove to the nearest Tractor Supply and purchased the C46540. I didn't get the rebate that some of you folks enjoyed but I still got a good deal at $269.00. That included 10% off for a coupon I had and no tax on gensets purchased in Virginia (part of hurricane prep week). Thanks to all who have contributed thus far to an awsome forum. Now if I can just find the time to read the next 300+ pages! All this recent talk of failed AVR's does have me a bit concerned but I do realize the odds are slim. I did invest in a plug type AC voltmeter to use in the trailer just for piece of mind though and I never travel without my Fluke. Has anyone ever taken power factor readings for RV AC units with a hard start kit (capacitor)? I don't have one installed on my AC but was seriously thinking about it since I tripped a 20a house breaker last weekend when I fired the AC up. First time that has happened so I'm hoping my Champ will do OK when I test it. So would a hard start kit cause VAR flow back into the genny during the initial AC startup ? If so, I would imagine it's not present long enough to be concerned about before the power factor is correct and watts and vars are mostly out near unity? I just don't know enough about RV type loads (AC and Fridge) mainly to know if I should have concern or not.

RE: New Outback Loft from Keystone - missed the boat on this one

I think it's pretty cool as well. Keystone will surely sell a bunch of these to Nascar fans. If it's built right I would think it's water proof as they claim much like a popup is. The only dislike I saw was the cargo capacity as mentioned above and the very tiny bathtub.

RE: Gas prices changing your camping plans?

Nope.. We still plan on taking several trips this year but all are in my home state. Next year is a the big question mark though. I was planning on taking the family to Yellowstone. At todays gas prices I'm looking at $1900.00 just for fuel. Ouch! No telling what it will be this time next year.

RE: How Long Do Batteries Last?

I'd say about 5 to 6 years on average if you take good care of them. Use a battery conditioner in the off season if possible. I mostly use group 27's in my trailer and jon boat. I currently have a Deka group 27 that is 12 years old and still going strong. However, that's more of an exception than the norm. You can bet when it finally dies I will be buying the exact same battery.

RE: Do we need an internet service provider?

Yep. That will be fine. I assume they have a laptop with a wireless adapter. Using the camp grounds ISP would be the way to go. As mentioned above for email just use a free web based email service like yahoo, gmail or hotmail. Don't forget most public librarys have free wi-fi as well most coffee shops.

RE: overnight parking

There is a short article in the latest Highways magazine (Good Sam Publication) about this topic. It repeats what others have said in that the local city codes may not allow overnight parking with any type big rig in ANY parking lot. This is true even if the store manager gives you permission. The writers reasoning was that big rigs can damage the parking lot because of excessive weight. They also cause damage to the curbs. My first thought to this excuse was to ask "well how do most stores get supply shipments then" in a big truck of course. I don't see any Walmart parking lots torn up in my area. So.. if this is the case in most cities, how does one find out the local codes/law in the middle of the night when pulling off the highway? Can I be sure that signs will be posted stating "No Overnight Parking" ?? Will I have a chance to leave before the local police give me nice big fine ?? I to was planning on Walmarts for our overnight stops on a trip planned for this summer but now I may have to reconsider. Has anyone here been slapped with a ticket or fine while resting at the local Wal Mart ?

RE: 2008 Springdale 267BHLGL

Ours is a few years older (see sig ) but we love it. With the DW and two kids its just the right size. On most trips we even take one or two more kids and use the sofa bed and table bed. The slide makes a huge difference and really opens up the floor space.

RE: OK, another newbie TV thread...8.1L vs. Hemi vs. V10

My vote is for the 8.1. However, I am biased as well. especially if it has the Allison. This is an awesome tranny. in 03 like my 04 the Allison was a $2K option to upgrade from the GM tranny so be sure to check. The 1500HD is also a very capable truck but IMO no comparison to the 8.1/Allison combo and will only get a few more MPG's. Warning...You have to keep your foot out of though which is sometimes hard to do. Good luck with your decision and have fun.

How do you jack your trailer up

It's almost spring and it's time to check/replace bearings and brakes. This will be my first attempt at this task. After gathering info from this forum I think I can do it! However, I'm not sure how to properly jack this trailer up. I attempted to back the TT onto a stack of leveling boards about 6" high but the front axle wheels are still on the ground:S The axles are Al-KO 3500lb and the springs/shackles are the type that look like one is lower then the other. This didn't work so well so I got out the trusty 3 ton floor jack thinking I could place the jack head on the frame either in front or behind either axle and lift away. Well I quickly found that the propane line runs along the bottom of the frame on the curb side which would not allow room for the jack head:h So finally to my question how do most of you folks jack one side of the trailer up? I also read in the axle manual to never jack the trailer using the axle. If the blocks don't work for me what do I do on the road if I ever get a flat?

RE: Did I Buy the Kia of TT's?

Congrats on your purchase. We love our Keystone. If you take reasonable care of it you will have many enjoyable years with it. Don't mind the neighbor. Like others said just honk and wave when your off on the camping trail. Have Fun !

RE: What would YOU do-- advice wanted

I can certainly understand your concern with the Explorer. However, you say that it's still running fine. 115K is really not that bad as long as the vehicle is in good mechanical shape. Are you just anticipating problems with it? How about just taking it to your local mechanic for a good checkup and tune prior to your trip? For piece of mind maybe check with a few car rental company's or Ford dealers to see what the going rate is for a rental TV just in case you encounter problems. At least you could possibly rent a TV to continue your trip and pickup the Expi after any repair. If you do get a tow because of problems both the truck and trailer could be towed to the closest Ford dealer. Worst case I guess you could loose a day while making arrangements for a rental but at least you still have a bed for the night....

RE: New to TT RVing. Advice needed.

These older trailers are good ones but it is getting harder to find certain parts sometimes. Don't forget to check out any local auctions in your area. Some great deals can be found if you are patient. Good Luck..

RE: Clean the Slide Roof

I hold my son up in the air on both sides so he can sweep it off with the broom. If he gets any bigger though I will be purchasing a step ladder for the trailer. I have also dragged the picknic table over to the slide if it's not to heavy and just use it to stand on. Whatever works when you don't have a ladder.
